What is Lean

History of Lean

Overview

  • lean is not an acronym.  It is a descriptor indicating the philosophy of doing less and getting more.

  • it was popularized by the toyota production system.

  • Lean is heavily used throughout manufacturing and computer programming (agile and scrum are adaptations of lean).  military, medicine, construction and service industries are implementing lean.

  • Lean is a mindset or approach that creates a reflective culture.  The question, "does this add value?" naturally unearths waste and refines processes.

  • value is:
    • anything a customer will pay for
    • something that changes the product as it is being made
    • an operation that is done right the first time

  • In education the:
    • customer is the student
    • the product is student learning

  • Edward Deming and Taiichi Ohno were the original masterminds behind the Toyota Production System (Lean) success
